Community Harmony Projects 2004

My Life - Community Harmony Projects 2004Coolaburoo Neighbourhood Centre, Revesby, has published two new booklets My First Community and My Life: Looking Back, My Hopes and My Dreams! These publications are collections of students' work. They are the culmination of school community harmony projects supported by the Australian Government's Living in Harmony initiative with additional funding from Bankstown City Council, Clubs of NSW and the NSW Premier's Department.

My First Community is the result of projects at Banksia Road Public School, Greenacre and Lakemba Public School. The aim of the project was to explore the themes of identity, cultural diversity and multiculturalism in the Bankstown and Canterbury areas of Sydney.

The Banksia Road Public School project started off with whole school community celebrations for Harmony Day involving cultural information sessions, music, dance, costume and feasting. Later a course of creative and educational workshops involved students in photography and artwork capturing the diverse yet linked nature of their community. The students then worked with a graphic designer to create the 2005 Calendar section illustrated with their art and comments.

At Lakemba Public School Year 6 students and their teachers focussed on their local shopping community. They investigated how and why shop keepers established their businesses in Lakemba and looked for a common thread between cultures. They interviewed and photographed the shopkeepers and community members. They then worked with a graphic designer to produce the Food Shops and Recipes section of the publication.

My Life: Looking Back, My Hopes and My Dreams! is the result of an after school Art/Writing Project involving twenty two students from language backgrounds other than English at Chester Hill High School Intensive English Centre. The students
explored and shared their memories, hopes and dreams and expressed them in
poignant writing and artwork which is beautifully reproduced in the booklet.
