Stand Up! Speak Out! 2007

Stand Up! Speak Out! 2007, an anti-racism conference sponsored by the NSW Department of Education and Training and the NSW Teachers Federation, was held in Sydney on Saturday 28th April. It was attended by over 300 delegates, students, educators and community members from all regions of NSW.

Two themes were addressed at the conference:
The changing face of racism: New racisms and their effects on education and training and
Making the difference: Effective practice in anti-racism education.

The keynote speakers were Professor Hurriyet Babacan, Victoria University Melbourne, who delivered an address entitled Making New Racisms Visible and Mr Richard Frankland, Indigenous singer, song writer and film maker, who challenged the delegates with Face the past to face the future: a shared identity for all Australians.

The NSW Director General of Education and Training, Michael Coutts-Trotter, opened the conference. In his address to delegates Mr Coutts-Trotter said the values taught in public education challenge racism and create schools where communities are formed and sustained. Read his address to delegates.
