Introduction

This activity looks at the major regions of origin of Australian settlers in the years 1987-88 and 1997-98 and considers reasons for migration.

Suggested Activities

Download student copies of bar graph.

Interpret the graph Australia's settlers-major regions of origins 1987-88 and 1997-98.
Present the information in another type of graph eg two pie graphs separating the periods
Identify countries that are included in the major regions.
Discuss the types of events that might account for immigration in different numbers in the two periods from some countries eg the former USSR and Yugoslavia.

Additional Strategies

Create a timeline of world events 1980-2000 that have affected migration to Australia. Compare them with events in Australia at the same period.
