Australia as a culturally diverse nation has made significant progress in developing as a non-discriminatory democratic society. This activity encourages students to consider that progress, and future goals.

  • Divide the years since European settlement of Australia into decades and allocate periods to individual or groups of students.
  • Students go online to the Racism.no way. timeline and research significant dates.
  • Students come together to assemble timeline.
  • Discuss the progress that has been made and relate it to Reconciliation.
  • Discuss the direction students feel Australia is taking.


Additional Strategies


  • In groups students create a series of depictions or tableaux to illustrate the most significant events in their decade.
  • The rest of the class responds by captioning the scenes.
  • Captions are sequenced to form a timeline.
