Introduction

Australia as a culturally diverse nation has made significant progress in developing as a non-discriminatory democratic society. This activity encourages students to consider that progress, and future goals.

Fact sheet Reconciliation

Divide the years since European settlement of Australia into decades and allocate periods to individual or groups of students.
Students go online to the Racism.no way. timeline and research significant dates.
Students come together to assemble timeline.
Discuss the progress that has been made and relate it to Reconciliation.
Discuss the direction students feel Australia is taking.

Additional Strategies

In groups students create a series of depictions or tableaux to illustrate the most significant events in their decade.
The rest of the class responds by captioning the scenes.
Captions are sequenced to form a timeline.
