Suggested Activities
1. Ask each student to write down the event they consider most important in the development of Australia as a culturally diverse nation.Ask students to share their responses and give a brief justification for their choice.Write the responses on the board and take a vote for the most significant ten.Check with Teacher's notes for any major omissions.
2. Divide the class into ten groups or pairs and assign one event to each.Write an analysis of how the event changed Australian lives. Research the historical period during which the event took place. What was the situation before the event? How did history change as a result? Individually or in groups prepare a report for presentation to the class in chronological order of the event taking place.
Additional Strategies
1. Write an imaginary interview with a person whose life was influenced by one of the events.
2. Research and write a report on the life of a person central to one of the events.
3. Collage. Each group designs an A4 print or pictorial poster highlighting the event they have studied. Group or overlap the posters on to a wall chart for classroom display.
