Suggested Activities Some initial strategies could include:
- raise the profile of the member of staff responsible for dealing with issues of discrimination including racism. Display the officer's name and contact details at the front desk.
- release the officer from class to visit other classes to publicise his/her role, to plan strategies with the student leadership body and to be available for consultation
- What is RACISM? What are the effects of RACISM? Discuss in home class periods. Print and laminate posters for display around the school.
- create a school anti-racism charter
- have regular input in school or year assemblies recognising cultural diversity. Invite speakers from the community or national organisations. Involve local Aboriginal elders.
- highlight inclusive materials available for students in the library eg books which reflect the multicultural nature of the school
- use the Racism. No way! Cultural Diversity Mini Webquest to research Australia's development as a multicultural nation and evaluate the contributions made by individuals and cultural groups
- visit Making Multicultural Australia to explore our cultural heritage
- conduct a cultural exchange program with another school. NSW government, Catholic and independent schools register with Cultural Exchange Programs in Schools
- organise a school public speaking competition with a topic that has a multicultural theme. Finalists could present at a whole school assembly. Encourage students to enter your state multicultural public speaking competition.
- record oral histories of people in the school and its community. This could be a senior project done as a gift to the school or just as a class activity
- have a multicultural treasure hunt around the school with information to be found in various locations.
- use the internet to tell the wider community about your school. Create a section with an anti-racism focus.
