The Commonwealth Government says SORRY

The Commonwealth Government will formally say sorry to the stolen generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples when the Parliament resumes in Canberra next week.

The Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, will deliver the apology on Wednesday 13 February 2008 at around 9:00 am, as the first item of business for the new Parliament.

The day before, at the official opening of the Parliament, the Ngunnawal People will perform a welcome to country ceremony - the first time this has happened in the national Parliament.

Both are historic events for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and for all Australians.

Link to the question and answer sheet that Reconciliation Australia has prepared to help all Australians understand the background to the apology that will be made to the stolen generations.
