Poster Competition for Schools: Harmony Day 21 March 2009

'Building Community Harmony'

1. Background to the Poster Competition

The annual Harmony Day poster competition provides NSW primary and high school students with an opportunity to participate in and develop the theme of 'BUILDING COMMUNITY HARMONY' as part of celebrating Harmony Day 21st March 2009.

B'nai B'rith Anti Defamation Commission conducts the competition with support provided by a number of organisations and individuals. Full details of the 2009 competition, entry forms and winning entries of the 2008 competition can be found on the Moving Forward Together web site.

Two visual arts units of work to support the Harmony Day Poster Competition can be found in the Lesson Ideas section of this site. The units are suitable for Stages 2&3 and 3&4.

2. 2009 Theme: 'BUILDING COMMUNITY HARMONY'

The theme supports one or more of the following aspects highlighted by Harmony Day:

  • A society that promotes tolerance and understanding between different cultural and ethnic groups and respects the language, culture and religion of minority groups
  • A society that encourages respect for difference and rebukes humiliation of groups or individuals perceived to be different
  • A society that is dedicated to combating prejudice and discrimination
  • A society that recognises the qualities of different cultural and ethnic groups
  • A society that promotes access and equity for minority and/or disadvantaged groups
  • A society that is considerate and has support and understanding for those who are less fortunate
  • A society that does not discriminate against individuals or groups on the basis of religion, gender, ethnic origin or age
  • A society opposed to vilification, hate mongering and violence.

3. Poster Competition Details
3.1 Competition Categories:
Entries will be judged in regional groups with a

  • Junior category for primary school students (Kindergarten - Year 6)
  • Senior category for high school students (Year 7 - Year 12).

Junior and Senior state winners will be selected from regional finalists.

3.2 Design Brief
Dimensions: Posters to be A3 size (29.7 cm x 42 cm) either portrait or landscape.
Medium: Watercolour, acrylic, gouache, oil, pastels, crayons, colour pencils, photographs, computer graphics, collage or assemblage


3.3 Submission of Entries
Entries may be submitted by individual students or by groups of students. All entries must be original and incorporate the theme 'BUILDING COMMUNITY HARMONY'. Entry forms can be downloaded from www.movingforwardtogether.com.au

3.4 Closing Date
The closing date for all entries is 19 December 2008. Entries will become the property of B'nai B'rith unless return of the submitted poster is requested.

3.5 Judging
A panel of qualified and respected art critics and educational personnel will judge the entries.

Prizes will be made to students whose posters best illustrate an innovative approach to theme 'BUILDING COMMUNITY HARMONY' complementing community harmony and the principles of Harmony Day.

3.6 Winning entries

  • Each entrant will receive a certificate of acknowledgement
  • Winning Junior and Senior regional entries will each receive a prize of $150
  • The overall State winner in each category (Junior and Senior) will receive a prize of $500
  • Each of the schools attended by the two State prize winners will receive $250
  • Winners will be announced at NSW Parliament House on 23 March 2009
  • Winning entries may be published, exhibited publicly, used for promotional purposes or uploaded onto world wide web.
