International Day of the World's Indigenous People 9 August 2002
Friday 9th August is the International Day of the World's Indigenous People. In 1994, the General Assembly of the United Nations decided that this day be observed each year during the International Decade of the World's Indigenous People (1995-2004).
The goal of the decade is to strengthen international co-operation for the solution of problems faced by indigenous people in such areas as human rights, the environment, development, education and health. The world's population of indigenous people now numbers some 350 million individuals representing over 5,000 languages and cultures in more than 70 countries on every continent.
