New resource for Australian schools
Roads to Refuge: Refugees in Australia is a new kit for schools produced by the Centre for Refugee Research at the University of NSW, the NSW Department of Education and Training and the NSW Migration Heritage Centre.
Dr John Yu, Chancellor of the University of NSW. recently launched this teaching resource for use with both primary and secondary schools. The kit aims to give students a comprehensive understanding of refugee issues, particularly those relevant to Australia.
The kit contains presenter's notes, a primary or secondary video and student books and a set of slides for each session. The presenter's notes include background information and suggestions for discussion, activities and the use of the video. The student books include factual information, refugee stories, activities and discussion points.
Key elements include the meaning and experience of persecution and its impacts, loss and grief, the difference between refugees and other migrants, survival on the refugee journey and the strengths of refugees and their determination to succeed. It also addresses ways in which students and their families in the wider Australian community can create a welcoming environment for refugees, assisting them in settling successfully and contributing to our multicultural society.
There is also a community resource kit produced in collaboration with the Australian Lawyers for Human Rights organisation.
The school kits will be distributed to all NSW Government schools in Term 4 2003. Additional copies are available from The Centre for Refugee Research, University of NSW.
