Harmony Day 2004

A message from the Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs:

Australians speak over 200 languages and come from as many different cultural backgrounds. Diversity reaches into every part of our community life.

Harmony Day highlights the importance of community harmony for connecting people in our diverse society. The overarching theme of Harmony of You + Me = Us emphasises the inclusiveness of Harmony Day and its relevance to all Australians.

Harmony Day occurs on 21 March each year and has grown in stature to become Australia's largest national multicultural event.

As part of the Australian Government's Living in Harmony initiative, Harmony Day provides Australians with an opportunity to get to know each other better by:
promoting our many successes as a multicultural society;
re-committing ourselves to respect, goodwill and understanding between all Australians of all backgrounds; and
saying 'no' to racism.

Central to the success of Harmony Day is the support it enjoys from a wide range of stakeholder groups. Each year in the lead up to and on Harmony Day itself, schools, educational institutions, sporting bodies, community organisations, government and businesses around Australia publicly demonstrate their commitment and support for community harmony and its importance to Australia.

Community harmony is everyone's business. Get involved and actively celebrate Harmony Day on 21 March.
