Walyalup Dreamings – a rarely seen Fremantle

Walyalup Dreamings is a groundbreaking exhibition and public programme which invites participants to see a rarely seen side of Fremantle's culture and heritage.

Walyalup is a Nyoongar name for the Fremantle area and the exhibition and programme seek to broaden the communities' perspective and understanding of Nyoongar art and culture.

The exhibition, held at the Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery until Sunday, July 18, presents work by 18 established and emerging Nyoongar artists who have been inspired by local Dreaming stories.

It is supported by a public programme developed through collaboration between indigenous representatives, the City of Fremantle and the WA Maritime Museum which includes cultural tours, story telling and art workshops.

Established artists Shane Pickett and Yarra will give an overview of the exhibition and talk about their own work from 2-3pm on July 3rd at the Moores Building.

On Sunday, July 4 the Walyalup Dreamings Council of Elders will talk about the exhibition, Dreaming stories and answer questions from the audience.

There are also 3 walking tours during the next two weeks by indigenous story teller Trevor Walley and Mike Lefroy from the WA Maritime Museum, who will visit sites in Fremantle and talk about Walyalup, ancestors and a non-indigenous perspective. The tours start and finish at the Moores Building.

Other activities in the public programme include painting, sand painting, tarp knife making and NAIDOC Week activities which start at the Fremantle Town Hall at 10am on Friday, July 9 before moving to the Moores Building at 2pm for fun art and a tour.

For more information on dates, times and venues for the public programme, contact Steve Grant on 9432 9919, or for information on the Walyalup Dreamings exhibition contact Andre Lipscombe on 9842 9828 or 0410 466 095.
