FIFA: NO ROOM FOR RACISM IN FOOTBALL
Monday 21 March, 2005
To coincide with the United Nations' International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination today FIFA once again calls upon the world football family to ensure that there is no room for racism, in any form, in football.
"Fighting this scourge is one of our most important tasks in the current climate," said FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter. "FIFA passed a resolution against discrimination in 2001 and it is now more pertinent than ever.
Whether associations, teams or players at each and every level, we all have a duty to ensure that our conduct does not lead to anybody being marginalised. Football has to set an example for others to follow."
In response to the most recent outbreaks of racism, the FIFA Executive Committee, at its meeting on 7-8 March, ratified the FIFA President's proposed creation of a group of FIFA anti-racism ambassadors. This group, which will bring together some of the leading players and coaches both past and present, will be headed by Thierry Henry.
The FIFA Statutes forbid racism and discrimination, with article 3 ("Non-discrimination and stance against racism") stating:
"Discrimination of any kind against a country, private person or groups of people on account of ethnic origin, gender, language, religion, politics or any other reason is strictly prohibited and punishable by suspension or expulsion."
