National Child Protection Week

HELP BUILD A CHILD FRIENDLY AUSTRALIA

National Child Protection Week is September 4th - 10th 2005.
This year it will be launched in the South Western Sydney region.

The focus is not just on preventing child abuse and neglect but about building child friendly communities. Such communities provide children with opportunities to maximise their growth and development: socially, emotionally, culturally and spiritually. We want to raise awareness of what this means and to gain commitment from communities to build a child friendly Australia.

The University of Western Sydney is actively supporting National Child Protection Week which is facilitated by the National Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN).

NAPCAN NSW is running a competition to select entries for a publication entitled "Visions of a Child Friendly Community" which will contain stories and pictures from school students, university students and others in the region. All school students in the South Western Region are invited to enter for one or both of the following competitions.

Competition 1

An answer of not more than 300 words to one of the following questions:

If you woke up tomorrow morning and the world had changed overnight so that everyone was friendly towards children, what would you notice, what would be different?

If children are our future what needs to happen now?

Competition 2

A picture (not a photograph) showing what for you would be most important to have in a child friendly world. Please write a sentence about your picture.

There will be 2 prizes of $50 in each of the following categories

Students aged 5 - 7 years
Students aged 8-11 years
Students aged 12-16 years.

Winners of the competition will have their stories and pictures published in "Visions of a Child Friendly Community".
