International anti-racism approaches |

The new anti-racism
The term anti-racism education emerged in the 1970s and gained popularity and
is distinguished from, but linked to, the terms multicultural education and
others such as multi-ethnic education and intercultural education.
Advocates of a new anti-racism call for responses to cultural diversity to go
beyond addressing minority disadvantage in education and promoting community
harmony and tolerance. They emphasise viewing anti-racism as a much broader
organised social response and focus on the elimination of racism and the
equalisation of power structures within education systems as a basis for
development of policies. This approach to anti-racism espouses comprehensive
social goals and encourages principles of collectivism and mobilisation. It has
an emphasis on reorienting agencies, thinking and acting inter-sectorally,
empowering communities to take control of prioritising actions and determining
where resources are spent.
