Student support and development

ACT Government Schools Student Network

Two student council representatives from each high school and secondary college participate on the Schools Network. North and southside networks meet regularly with occasional combined meetings.

The purpose of the Schools Network is twofold. Firstly, students are informed about departmental procedures, policy and initiatives so that they may become knowledgeable leaders in their schools and participate productively on the School Board. Secondly, students are provided with the opportunity to participate in consultative processes.

Community Languages Program

The Community Languages Program includes twenty-nine language-based programs for children in K-12 from language backgrounds other than English. The programs are funded by the Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs and are co-ordinated by the ACT Ethnic Schools Association.

Indigenous Education Worker

Aboriginal Education Workers are employed in Canberra primary and secondary schools and at Jervis Bay Primary School. Placements are made on the number of Indigenous students enrolled.

Aboriginal Education Workers:

  • provide support for Indigenous students and assist them to achieve their potential in the school environment
  • work with the school community to raise awareness of Indigenous cultures
  • assist school principals and teachers in implementing programs relating Indigenous culture/s and studies
  • maintain effective relationships with parents and encourage them to take an active part in the school community.

Student Exchange Program

Students on exchange programs attend an ACT or an international school for a period of 1-12 months.

Student Representative Council

All ACT primary schools, high schools and secondary colleges have student representative councils. Representatives are elected by their student body. The councils provide a forum for students to discuss a variety of school and community issues including policy and programs relating to racism and complaints procedures. They also provide a forum for students to be involved in decision making at appropriate levels. Usually two members of high school and secondary college student representative councils are elected to represent students on the School Board.
