Takin' a Stand
The enactment of the Racial Hatred Act in 1995 prompted the Race
Discrimination Commissioner to conduct a national information strategy aimed at
educational institutions and young people on the issue of racial hatred. The Act
makes unlawful public acts which offend, insult, humiliate, or intimidate a
person or group of persons because of their race, colour, national or ethnic
origin. The major strategy was the production of a Streetwise comic to provide
students and young people with clear, relevant and accessible information on
their legal rights and responsibilities under the Racial Hatred Act. The target
groups for the comic are high school and younger TAFE students (14-17
years).
Takin' a Stand is informative, entertaining and accessible to a diverse range
of young people and is a useful educational resource for teachers, youth workers
etc. It has been distributed widely to secondary schools throughout the country.
Youth Challenge
A secondary schools Youth Challenge program was introduced in December 1998
and will run in all states and territories on a regional basis. The program
brings together secondary students and community representatives to work on
human rights and anti-discrimination problems and the processes of decision
making and leadership in the area of human rights. The Human Rights and Equal
Opportunity Commission provides materials that are curriculum linked and sent to
all schools via the Studies magazine, prior to the conduct of Youth Challenges.
Special training will be provided to teachers starting in 2000 to assist them to
bring the materials to the wider school audience. Contact the Public Affairs
Unit of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission for further
information on (02) 9244 9600. More information can be found at: http://www.humanrights.gov.au/youthchallenge/
