Policies and guidelines

Aboriginal Education Policy

The Aboriginal Education Policy is mandatory in all government schools. The policy has a dual purpose: to promote the educational achievements of Aboriginal students and to educate all students about Aboriginal Australia.

Anti-Bullying Plan for Schools

The Anti-bullying Plan is a key part of every school's planning for student wellbeing and effective learning. It sets out the requirements for dealing with bullying behaviour in NSW government schools. It includes operational guidelines and a framework for schools to use to develop and implement an Anti-bullying Plan with specific strategies for identifying, reporting and dealing with bullying behaviours.

Anti-Racism Policy

The Anti-Racism Policy supersedes the Anti-Racism Policy Statement, 1992. It articulates the aspirations and commitment of the NSW Department of Education and Training. It outlines the responsibilities of schools for ensuring that all learning and working environments are free from discrimination and racism, including the appointment and training of an Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO).

Cultural Diversity and Community Relations Policy: Multicultural education in schools

The Cultural Diversity and Community Relations Policy supersedes the Multicultural Education Policy Statement, 1983. It outlines the responsibilities of schools to provide teaching and learning programs in relation to multicultural education, including promoting community harmony, enabling students from all cultures and communities to identify as Australians within a democratic multicultural society and developing knowledge, skills and values for participation as active citizens.

Ethnic Affairs Priorities Statement (EAPS) Plan

The NSW Government requires all government agencies to develop and report on annual Ethnic Affairs Priorities Statements (EAPS) forward plans. EAPS plans set out management practices that promote access to and participation in the full range of services for clients from language backgrounds other than English. The EAPS program has a quality standards framework by which government agencies are externally rated and required to progressively improve their performance over time.

Responding to Suggestions, Complaints and Allegations

This policy became effective on 23 April 2001. The sections relating to anti-discrimination provide details of procedures to be used when complaints are made. Every school must appoint an Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO) whose role it is to assist complainants with complaints of racial discrimination.

Securing a Collaborative Partnership into the Future

Securing a collaborative partnership into the future - consolidating a 21 year working relationship is a partnership agreement between the New South Wales Department of Education and Training and the New South Wales Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Incorporated that aims to benefit both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians in education and training.

The document outlines the parties' commitment to:

  • ensure that the agenda for Aboriginal education is determined with the assistance of Aboriginal people
  • promote the educational achievements of Aboriginal students
  • educate all students about Aboriginal Australia
  • develop and deliver culturally appropriate programs for Aboriginal students
  • ensure Aboriginal input into decision making
  • respect the diversity of Aboriginal culture
  • support the maintenance of Aboriginal culture
  • consult on the targeting of resources that ensure equitable outcomes for Aboriginal students
  • consult to provide innovative solutions to education for Aboriginal students
  • increase the knowledge and skills of staff in Aboriginal history, culture and contemporary issues.

Student Welfare Policy

The Student Welfare Policy (1996) has three focus areas: effective learning and teaching; positive climate and good discipline; and community participation. It emphasises the need for a safe, caring school environment which recognises the diversity within the school community and provides programs and support which acknowledge difference and promote harmony.

Values in NSW Public Schools

The Values in NSW Public Schools policy sets out the NSW approach to values and values education in public schools.
