Aboriginal and Islander Education Workers (AIEWs)
These Indigenous staff are located in urban primary and secondary schools to
provide ongoing support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
Their work has a particular focus on improved enrolment, attendance and
retention rates, which will lead to improved educational outcomes.
Aboriginal and Islander Tertiary Aspirations Program
This program provides support and encouragement to Indigenous students to
assist their completion of formal secondary studies and then entry to tertiary
education. The program gives students enhanced study skills and confidence and
also seeks to involve parents and other support providers.
Bilingual Assistants in Intensive English Units
Bilingual Assistants are a major support service as they provide interpreting
assistance to students and parents. They provide in class support for students
and cultural awareness information for staff.
