Student support and development

Aboriginal and Islander Education Workers (AIEWs)

These Indigenous staff are located in urban primary and secondary schools to provide ongoing support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Their work has a particular focus on improved enrolment, attendance and retention rates, which will lead to improved educational outcomes.

Aboriginal and Islander Tertiary Aspirations Program

This program provides support and encouragement to Indigenous students to assist their completion of formal secondary studies and then entry to tertiary education. The program gives students enhanced study skills and confidence and also seeks to involve parents and other support providers.

Bilingual Assistants in Intensive English Units

Bilingual Assistants are a major support service as they provide interpreting assistance to students and parents. They provide in class support for students and cultural awareness information for staff.
