Board of Senior Secondary Schools Studies Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Senior Syllabus

The processes and content of this syllabus constitute essential learning for all Australians. Knowledge of the histories, societies and cultures of Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people is the foundation for an understanding of Australian society and its history.

Cultural Heritage Resource Program

A program which employs a number of Cultural Officers responsible for providing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with opportunities to develop their cultural heritage through a range of cultural activities, both traditional and contemporary. A focus of the program is the histories, cultures, languages, spiritual beliefs and lifestyles of Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people.

Pre-school to Year 12 Guidelines and Framework for the Teaching of Aboriginal Studies and Torres Strait Islander Studies in Queensland Schools (Draft)

The draft Pre-school to Year 12 Guidelines and Framework for the Teaching of Aboriginal Studies and Torres Strait Islander Studies in Queensland Schools is comprised of a set of guidelines, a comprehensive framework and companion booklet. The program aims to assist the development of school curriculum studies for all students in Queensland schools on the histories, cultures, languages, spiritual beliefs and lifestyles of Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people.

The guidelines and framework provide a recommended process for the development and implementation of Aboriginal studies and Torres Strait Islander studies. Examples of teaching approaches, information on assessment of students, and evaluation of programs have been included to support teachers, while an extensive section is provided on ethics and protocols for teacher support.

Reconciliation in Education Project

From a trial pilot in 1997, this project was strengthened and culminated in 1998 in a two day workshop and presentations by more than 400 secondary school students, teachers and community members from the metropolitan area. In addition, the National Reconciliation Student Activities Booklet was launched in Queensland by the Director-General of Education. Schools were actively encouraged to pursue the Reconciliation Process within the broader curriculum framework and engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities within this process.

Under the Skin: Combating Racism in Queensland Schools Curriculum Material

This material supports teachers to engage students in exploting the issues of racism and countering racism. The material includes lesson plans, resource sheets, activity sheets and web activities. The material or parts of the material may be used with a range of secondary year levels and within a range of syllabus considerations. However, identifiable links are as follows:

  • BSSSS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies
  • Studies of Society and Environment Years 1-10 Syllabus Level 5 and 6 and Beyond 6 Strands Culture and Identity and Time, Continuity and Change
  • New Basics Rich Task - Australian National Identity: Influences and Perspectives.
