Pre-school to Year 12 Guidelines and Framework for the Teaching of Aboriginal
Studies and Torres Strait Islander Studies in Queensland Schools
(Draft)
The draft Pre-school to Year 12 Guidelines and Framework for the Teaching of
Aboriginal Studies and Torres Strait Islander Studies in Queensland Schools is
comprised of a set of guidelines, a comprehensive framework and companion
booklet. The program aims to assist the development of school curriculum studies
for all students in Queensland schools on the histories, cultures, languages,
spiritual beliefs and lifestyles of Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander
people.
The guidelines and framework provide a recommended process for the
development and implementation of Aboriginal studies and Torres Strait Islander
studies. Examples of teaching approaches, information on assessment of students,
and evaluation of programs have been included to support teachers, while an
extensive section is provided on ethics and protocols for teacher support.
Reconciliation in Education Project
From a trial pilot in 1997, this project was strengthened and culminated in
1998 in a two day workshop and presentations by more than 400 secondary school
students, teachers and community members from the metropolitan area. In
addition, the National Reconciliation Student Activities Booklet was launched in
Queensland by the Director-General of Education. Schools were actively
encouraged to pursue the Reconciliation Process within the broader curriculum

this process.
