accompanying guidelines to encourage and increase the participation of
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents and community members in all areas
of the school environment, particularly in educational decision making.
Queensland Indigenous Education Consultative Body (QIECB)
The QIECB was established to provide independent advice to the State Minister for Education and the Commonwealth Minister for Education, Science and Training in issues impacting on educational outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners, as informed by independent comunity consultations and research. The QIECB consists of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educators and community members who represent education systems and sectors and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities at large.
The QIECB carries out independent research and consultations with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, schools, education systems and key stakeholders on the following key strategic issues identified in the QIECB Strategic Plan:
- Completion of Twelve Years of Schooling or its Equivalent
- Pre-Schooling Experiences
- Teacher Education
- Standard Australian English and Languages
- Community Capacity Building
- Inclusive, Assessment, Monitoring and Reporting.
The QIECB provides the avenue for community input into policy and strategic advice and decision-making processes. It holds three regional community forums a year to consult with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members and key stakeholders and in addition, carries out statewide consultations as part of its research consultative projects.
