Student support and development
Aboriginal and Cultural Studies
Aboriginal Studies are studies for all South Australian students of the
histories, cultures, values, beliefs, languages, lifestyles and roles of
Indigenous Australian peoples, including the past, present day and future
perspectives.
In South Australian schools, the teaching of Aboriginal Studies should have a
local and South Australian focus and then expand beyond as students have a base
for learning and as they proceed through their schooling.
National Aboriginal Day and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week
The Department of Education, Training and Employment celebrates NAIDOC Week each year. This year's theme is Recognition, Rights and Reform. The 2002 NAIDOC celebrations (July 7-14) commemorate the 10th anniversary of the historic Mabo High Court decision and the gains that have flowed from it.
Reconciliation Week
Towards Reconciliation (Department of Education, Training and Employment,
1998) was distributed to all schools to encourage schools to include
Reconciliation in the curriculum and to participate each year in Reconciliation
Week.
Reconciliation Week, May 27-June 3, provides an opportunity for schools
and their communities to celebrate their own achievements and to make further
progress towards Reconciliation. The Towards Reconciliation, Activities for
Reconciliation Week materials build on the work currently undertaken by teachers
and students around Reconciliation. The suggested activities provide
opportunities for children and students to explore the meaning of Reconciliation
and to take their part in the public process of Reconciliation through planning
and taking action.
Reconciliation Week is an annual event which began after the Council for
Aboriginal Reconciliation was established in 1991. The Council's work is a
significant part of the lead up to the centenary of Federation in Australia on 1
January 2001.
