Aboriginal Student Support and Parental Awareness (ASSPA) Committees
These school-based parent committees receive per capita funding to conduct a variety of activities to enhance the educational opportunities of Indigenous students at preschool, primary and secondary schools. The Committees provide a way for Indigenous community members to participate in the schooling of Indigenous students, encourage a culturally supportive schooling environment and often manage Homework Centres or run education information projects for Indigenous students.
Community Events
Community Events include:
- NAIDOC Week
- Reconciliation Week
- Harmony Day
- National Refugee Week
- Hmong New Year.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Programs for Parents and
Community
For parents and interested community groups ESL staff provide counselling and
information on the culture of education in Australian schools. ESL teachers
facilitate parent-teacher dialogue by organising interpreters and training
teachers to use them.
Health Promoting Schools Implementation Material
Schools and their communities share responsibility for promoting the benefits
of healthy living and well being. They need to have shared values in relation to
supportive environments, quality teaching and learning and active community
participation. Schools and their communities need to develop a shared approach
to promoting in students the key intentions of responsibility, identity,
relationships, active participation and well being. While schools cannot be
expected to solve every health or social problem in our society, health
promoting schools can make a significant contribution to increasing the quality
of life for their students, staff and community. This initiative provides a
framework for communities to examine issues such as racism as they create a
safe, secure, co-operative, respectful and tolerant school climate.
Tasmanian Aboriginal Education Association Inc. (TAEA)
The Tasmanian Aboriginal Education Association Inc (TAEA) is an independent,
self-elected community organisation that provides a consultative forum on
Aboriginal education issues with Aboriginal community members.
