Aboriginal Arts Matters VideoThis video provides examples of Aboriginal Arts and artists and display contexts for Aboriginal Arts. It offers suggestions for teachers on how Aboriginal Arts can be presented in ways that are culturally sensitive to Aboriginal culture for all students. Annotated Bibliography of Multicultural Education ResourcesThis bibliography contains an annotated listing of 209 books, videos and journal entries (post 1988), which are immediately useful in the classroom or as background information on multiculturalism and multicultural education. The materials have been classified into Key learning areas (KLAs); Levels; and Resource types. A list of key words and associated entry listings are also supplied as an additional reference guide. Beginning English - Support Materials for Primary New ArrivalsThis publication supports mainstream primary classroom teachers by providing practical ideas and resources for newly arrived ESL learners. The material is organised into sixteen units of work based around topics that are appropriate for newly arrived students. Each unit contains learning outcomes for both the topic and for English language learning, lists of vocabulary and grammar features, worksheets which can be photocopied, additional references and lists of resources. The activities and worksheets are designed to encourage communication and interaction between the new student, the teacher and other students in the class. Culturally Inclusive Units of WorkUnits of work have been developed based on CSF II to demonstrate ways teachers can incorporate multicultural perspectives into the key learning areas of the Arts, English, Health and Physical Education and Studies of Society and the Environment. Materials have also been developed to ensure that student visits to Scienceworks and the Museum of Victoria are enhanced by the availabilty of culturally and linguistically inclusive resources. Early Years Literacy Program and English as a Second Language (ESL) Case Study ProjectThis CDRom, developed with the participation of 10 schools in a case study project, highlights how major elements of the Early Literacy Project can be used to appropriately support ESL learners in the early years. English as a Second Language (ESL) Companion to the English CSF IIThe revised ESL Companion is an adjunct to the English CSF and provides a framework for the development of appropriate programs for the many students in Victorian schools who are learning English as a second language. It provides a broad overview of the stages of English language development for ESL students and establishes the framework for the ESL Teacher Support Materials (formerly ESL Course Advice). English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher Support MaterialsESL Teacher Support Materials (TSM) provide schools and teachers with further assistance in planning curriculum and programs for students learning English as a second language. In addition, ESL annotations to TSM for all the key learning areas encourage schools and teachers to provide culturally appropriate and inclusive curriculum and provide practical strategies for assisting ESL students to access the language and content of KLAs. English as a Second Language (ESL) Transition ProjectThe Department of Education & Training (DE&T) has completed a transition project targeting preliterate background ESL students in their transition to mainstream schools. The project involved supporting and documenting the students' progress as they move from an intensive ESL new arrivals setting into mainstream schools. If I Could Make a Difference - The Victorian Multicultural Commission Postcard CampaignIn 1997, the Victorian Multicultural Commission conducted a postcard campaign encouraging all students in Victoria in Years 10 and 11 to engage in discussions about diversity and tolerance in Australian society by completing either of the following postcard slogans, "If I could make a difference ... ." or "Being Australian means ... .". An information kit was produced to assist in the implementation of the project. The Teachers' Support Package suggests classroom activities and some of the dos and don'ts of teaching about cultural differences. Koorie 2000 WebsiteThe Koorie 2000 Website contains current information regarding the Koorie 2000 framework and its implementation. The site also contains information regarding Regional Koorie Education Committees and key initiatives and activities currently taking place. The website can be accessed at: http://www.sofweb.vic.edu.au/koorie/ Koorie Education Development Unit (KEDU)The KEDU comprises six central unit officers and outposted Koorie Education Development Officers, who provide policy, curriculum and program advice relating to Koorie education. The KEDU, in conjunction VAEAI, have developed three units of Teacher Support Material that contain Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. They are:
The units have been distributed to all government schools. An additional unit of work focusing on the Stolen Generation and Reconciliation has been developed and will be distributed to schools this year. Koorie Students in the Early Years VideoThis video, developed with the participation of 22 schools involved in a case study project, highlights how major elements of the early years literacy program can be used to appropriately support early years Koorie students. Languages and Multicultural Education Resource Centre (LMERC)LMERC is a specialist resource centre for teachers in government and non-government schools, the Victorian School of Languages and after hours ethnic schools, working in the fields of Languages Other Than English (LOTE), English as a Second Language (ESL), Studies of Asia, anti-racism and multicultural education. LMERC provides a lending library of resources and an outlet for the sale of publications. It is also a venue for seminars and professional development activities for teachers in mainstream and after hours ethnic schools. The sites, which are regularly updated, enable teachers and students to link to a wide range of sites, such as live radio and language specific newspapers. The websites can be accessed at: http://www.sofweb.vic.edu.au/lem/ Local Learning and Employment Networks (LLENs)In conjunction with the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, the Department of Education & Training (DE&T) and other stakeholders are developing an information kit to assist members of LLENS understand and support migrant and refugee youth learning English as a Second Language (ESL). Multicultural Education Programs and Practices in Victorian Schools: Case StudiesThe case studies included in this publication cover government, Catholic and independent schools which demonstrate a wide range of approaches to, and understandings of, inclusive practices and programs in schools. Regardless of the particular approach adopted, one of the common threads which emerges from schools featured, is their belief in the importance for students' development of respect for all cultures, by all cultures. Once embedded in the life of the school, this attitude is seen to be empowering for all students, providing enhanced opportunities for successful educational outcomes. No English Don't Panic, No English 2 - Questions and Answers (Revised editions)These publications provide information and strategies for primary classroom teachers of newly arrived ESL students in their first few weeks in Australia. They include information about student enrolment and placement and strategies to help students settle into a new school and to assist teachers to provide for their early English language learning needs. Not a Matter of Choice: Video and Teacher NotesThe Department of Education & Training (DE&T) has produced a video and accompanying teacher support materials to assist schools and teachers to better understand the settlement needs of refugee students and how they can help. The Journey: Teachers' Guide to the Long Room - Immigration MuseumThese materials which have been developed to assist teachers to maximise student visits to the Immigration Museum, provide background information, suggestions for pre-and post-visit activities, as well as a number of activity sheets for students. Towards ReconciliationThese curriculum materials have been developed through the National Coordinators of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education (NATSIEP), and disseminated to all Victorian government schools. They promote Reconciliation and celebrate National Reconciliation Week. Schools are encouraged to use the materials at any time during the year as Reconciliation is viewed as an ongoing process.
