National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) WeekThe Education Department participates in NAIDOC celebrations every year, with schools throughout the State participating. NAIDOC week celebrations encourage better understanding and relations between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal groups, and promote the positive aspects of Aboriginal cultures and societies. National Harmony DayThis event is now recognised as a national strategy to celebrate the diversity of cultures which now makes up for a very large component of Australian society. In 1998, the Education Department of Western Australia celebrated this event through the schools and district offices, central office participated in the signing of a large orange ribbon to contribute towards the opening ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Tracking Your RightsA resource for people who live and work in their communities and are able, through community action, to advocate for the practical exercise of rights at a local level. The resource aims to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to use anti-discrimination laws and other mechanisms which can help to bring about improvements in social justice for community members. Early Childhood Education PamphletA brochure entitled 'When Can My Child Start School?' translated into Indonesian, Serbian, Croatian, Chinese and Farsi which provides parents/caregivers and families with information on the changes to the starting age for education in government schools. Migrant Services DirectoryA directory listing all services and programs, both government and non-government, which have particular relevance to the needs of migrants and refugees. District Councils of Aboriginal EducationThe District Councils of Aboriginal Education are a consultative group for Aboriginal people to advise on the range of issues that impact on Aboriginal Education and to ensure that Aboriginal perspectives and views are taken into account in local decision making processes. The chairperson from each District Council of Aboriginal Education sits on a State Council of Aboriginal Education that meets twice a year. Aboriginal Liaison Officers (ALOs)ALOs provide an understanding and awareness of local Aboriginal issues, social structures, culture and traditions to the District Office and Department to enable a more effective delivery of education services to Aboriginal people. Parent Liaison VolunteersThe parent liaison volunteer assists parents in their communications with schools. The role includes:
Aboriginal Speakers/Elders Speakers ProgramThis program allows Aboriginal people the opportunity to become actively involved in the schooling process for children at all levels in an enjoyable way. Students have the opportunity to meet an Aboriginal Guest Speaker or an Elder to hear about Aboriginal culture and history from the speaker's personal point of view. The Aboriginal Speakers/Elders Speakers Program is presented from a personal viewpoint from local Aboriginal identities who are interested in becoming actively involved in children's education.
