Training and development

ABC of Two-Way Literacy and Learning

A train-the-trainer professional development initiative delivered jointly by an Aboriginal and a non-Aboriginal person working initially with Curriculum and Student Services District personnel and with Aboriginal and Islander Education Workers (AIEWs). Workshops address issues of cultural diversity, in particular those expressed through Aboriginal English, and the impact these issues have for teaching and learning.

English as a Second Language (ESL) in the Mainstream Teacher Development Course

A teacher training course that promotes culturally inclusive learning programs along with culturally sensitive and inclusive learning environments. It seeks to maximise the educational potential of all students, develop positive and supportive attitudes towards students for whom Standard Australian English is a second language or dialect so the Australian community can realise the full benefit of multiculturalism and productive diversity.

Our Story: Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Training Program

The cultural awareness package Our Story contains material for Aboriginal facilitators to use when providing training for non-Aboriginal teachers and other education sector workers. As an organisational strategy, the intent of the training package is to assist all staff (Aboriginal and non Aboriginal) to develop equitable and productive workplace relationships with each other, with Aboriginal children and parents and more broadly, with Aboriginal people in the wider Australian community.

Co-ordinators of Aboriginal Education

A Co-ordinator of Aboriginal Education is a member of the district team who assists districts to achieve improved outcomes in Aboriginal Education. The Coordinator of Aboriginal Education works in partnership with the Aboriginal Liaison Officer to provide a leadership role and assist in developing and implementing policies, programs and strategies aimed at improving outcomes in the area of Aboriginal Education.

Aboriginal Education Awards of Excellence

The intent of these awards is to promote a positive image of Aboriginal education and training, both within the Aboriginal and broader communities.

Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)/Diversity Awards

The Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)/Diversity Awards give recognition to teams and individuals who advance EEO/Diversity within the Department. The Awards also aim to stimulate innovation through the promotion of projects, activities and displays of creative leadership. The categories of the Awards reflect the four recognised EEO groups: Women; People from Non-English Speaking Backgrounds; People with Disabilities; and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. In 1999, a fifth category, Management of Diversity, was added. This category encourages the submission of entries that do not target specific EEO groups, but demonstrate best practice in the implementation of EEO/Diversity.

Aboriginal Languages Training Courses

In working towards the long term quantitative and qualitative aims of the LOTE2000 strategy, high quality intensive language courses and teacher training are available for currently employed Education Department Aboriginal teachers, AIEW or Language Specialist with competence in their respective Aboriginal language. Course aims are to:

  • increase the participants' confidence in using the target language in the classroom
  • raise significantly the participants' LOTE proficiency levels and, through exemplary teaching, raise their awareness of current LOTE methodology
  • put into practice the principles of the Curriculum Council's LOTE Learning Area Statement
  • provide skills in developing a range of materials which could be used in the participants' own classrooms.

Equal Opportunity Contact Officers (EOCOs)

Equal Opportunity Contact Officers (EOCOs) are local contact officers who are appointed and trained to support complainants. The EOCOs can assist a complainant to decide whether they have a valid case for complaints under the Act and to discuss avenues for resolution. EOCOs are located in schools across each education district.

It is the responsibility of each district education office to ensure that EOCOs are easily accessible. It is also the responsibility of each district education office to identify and provide training for EOCOs.
