This activity is designed to see how you would deal with racism in the community. The pop up answers offer suggestions on the best strategies to use.

Q1
A friend tells you a racist joke that you find funny. What do you do?

a. Laugh at the joke, but make no further comment.
b. Laugh at the joke and repeat it to all your friends.
c. Say and do nothing.
d. Point out that while some may find the joke funny, it is racist and may be offensive to others.

You are going to have a party. You have invited all of your friends and want to invite your new friend Anna who recently arrived in Australia from Somalia. You know two of your friends, Sue and Dana, do not like migrants. What do you do?

a. You invite Anna and make sure that both she and your other friends know who has been invited.
b. You decide not to invite Anna.
c. You call off the party. You don't know what else to do.
d. You invite Anna, but no one else.

You have made a new friend, May, who is Aboriginal and has just started at your school. Although your parents have never met May, they find out that you are friends and they say they don't want you to hang around “those sorts of people”. What do you do?

a. You tell May that your parents won't let you be friends with her.
b. You ask your parents if you can invite May over to your place so they can get to know her.
c. You ignore your parents and lie about being friends with May.
d. You scream at your parents and tell them to mind their own business.

You are on the bus with your friends. A couple of other passengers are speaking to each other in Spanish. Your friends remark that it is rude to speak in another language in public. What do you do?

You read an article in the newspaper which unfairly describes the suspect of a crime as being from a particular background. The article makes it clear that it is not known who committed the crime and that the police are still looking for the suspect. What do you do?

a. Nothing. You think the journalist is probably right.
b. Think the article is prejudiced, but do nothing.
c. Write a letter to the editor which points out the biased reporting.
d. Complain loudly to all your friends about the biased reporting in the paper.

One day at dinner, he tells your family that he has found a nice house that he would like to rent, but that the agent has said that the owners do not want to rent it to a “foreigner”.
